The Elite Guarantee

We believe in honest, transparent service. Our guarantee to you is simple: We will never suggest an appliance replacement if a reliable, cost-effective repair is possible.

When an appliance breaks, you have three choices: repair it, replace it, or pass it on. This guide walks through each one for homeowners in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties, with local disposal and donation options at the end.

Start with age: how long appliances usually last

Average life expectancy from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) / Bank of America study of home components. Use and maintenance matter a lot, so treat these as rough guides.

ApplianceTypical lifespan
RefrigeratorAbout 13 years
FreezerAbout 11 years
Washing machineAbout 10 years
Dryer (gas or electric)About 13 years
DishwasherAbout 9 years
Gas rangeAbout 15 years
Electric rangeAbout 13 years

Garbage disposalAbout 12 years

The 50% rule of thumb

A common guideline: if the appliance is past about half its expected life and the repair would cost more than about half the price of a comparable new one, replacing usually makes more sense. Otherwise, repair is usually the better value.

  • Usually worth repairing: a 4-year-old washer with a failed drain pump or lid switch; a refrigerator under 8 years old with a bad defrost heater, fan motor or control board; a dryer that won’t heat (often a heating element, thermal fuse or igniter); a dishwasher that won’t drain.
  • Often time to replace: a refrigerator near or past 13 years with a failed sealed system (compressor or refrigerant leak); a washer near 10 years with a failed transmission or cracked tub; any appliance where the part is discontinued.
  • Somewhere in between: get a diagnosis first. A clear diagnosis and parts quote lets you compare the real numbers.

Before you call: safe checks you can do yourself

  • Check the breaker and the outlet (plug a lamp in to test it). For gas appliances, make sure the gas valve is open.
  • Dryer: clean the lint screen and check that the vent hose isn’t crushed or clogged. A blocked vent is a common cause of slow drying and a fire risk.
  • Washer: check that the drain hose isn’t kinked and the machine is level. Clean the pump filter if your model has one.
  • Refrigerator: make sure vents inside aren’t blocked by food, and vacuum the condenser coils if you can reach them.
  • Dishwasher: clean the filter at the bottom of the tub.

Stop and call a professional if you smell gas, see scorching or smell burning plastic, find water near electrical parts, or the repair needs the appliance opened up. Refrigerant work requires an EPA-certified technician.

If you replace it: donate, recycle or dispose

Donate working appliances

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake ReStores accept appliances that are working and under 10 years old (refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, microwaves, A/C). The closest store for most of our customers is the Glen Burnie ReStore at 595 E. Ordnance Rd. Free pickup is available for qualifying items. See their donation guidelines.

Get paid to recycle an old fridge or freezer

Pepco’s Maryland Appliance Recycling Program picks up a working refrigerator or freezer for free and mails a $50 check (Pepco Maryland residential customers). BGE customers can check BGE’s appliance recycling program for current pickup and reward details.

Anne Arundel County pickup

Large metal items and appliances (including refrigerators and metal dishwashers) are collected on a separate, scheduled route. Don’t put them out on your regular trash day. Schedule through the County’s Bulk Item Pickup page or call (410) 222-6100, weekdays 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Smaller metal items can go to a County recycling center.

Prince George’s County pickup

White goods and large appliances (washers, dryers, stoves and anything with refrigerant, such as refrigerators and freezers) need an appointment through PGC311: call 3-1-1 or schedule online. Refrigerator and freezer doors must be taped shut. Details are on the County’s Bulky Trash page.

“Yahya was very knowledgeable and helped me select a new refrigerator that has the features I like. He took measurements to determine that the fridge will fit (1) through the front door, (2) past the pony wall that separates the living room from the kitchen and (3) fit in the space that the old fridge occupies.”
