Microwave Problems We Diagnose

The same symptom can come from several different parts, and sometimes from a setting or the home’s power supply instead of the microwave. We test the unit before recommending a repair.

Runs But Does Not Heat

A microwave that lights up, hums, and turns the plate but leaves food cold has a heating fault, and a running fan or lit display does not mean it is heating normally. Several parts in the heating circuit can cause this, so it takes testing to know which one has failed. Settings can cause it too: Whirlpool’s microwave not-heating guidance for its over-the-range models covers control lock, demo mode, and power level. Check your own manual for the equivalent settings.

Will Not Start or Stops During Operation

A microwave that is completely dead, will not start a cycle, or shuts off partway through may have a problem with the door latch and switches, a protective device inside the unit, the control, or the outlet and circuit it is plugged into. A dead microwave is not automatically a blown fuse. We separate a fault inside the microwave from a household power problem; household electrical work is a job for a licensed electrician.

  • Turntable does not rotate. The plate or support ring may be out of place, or the drive motor or coupler may have failed.
  • Controls do not respond. A control lock setting, a worn keypad, or the control board can all be responsible.
  • Unusual noises. Buzzing, grinding, or rattling can come from the turntable drive, a fan, or parts in the heating circuit.
  • Sparking. Stop the microwave. Metal, foil, or food residue inside the cavity are common causes; a damaged interior part is another. If it sparks again with the cavity clean and empty of metal, stop using it and call us.
  • Door does not close correctly. Stop using the microwave and see the safety section below.
  • Error messages. Codes are specific to the brand and model, so one code does not point to the same part on every microwave. Write it down for us.
  • Over-the-range fan or light problems. Vent fans and cooktop lights on over-the-range units have their own switches, motors, and bulbs that we test separately.

Microwave Types and Brands We Service

We repair residential over-the-range, built-in, and countertop microwaves. We are an independent repair company and work on major brands; brand names and logos on this site identify the appliances we service and do not mean we are authorized by the manufacturer. Not every model or installation can be repaired, so have the brand and model number ready when you call and we will confirm before booking.

What Happens During a Diagnostic Visit

When you call, tell us the brand, the model number, the type of microwave, and what it is doing. At your home, a technician tests the unit, identifies the failed part, and explains your repair options. We quote the microwave repair before starting, and there are no surprise charges. A microwave diagnosis is $89 and is credited toward the repair if you approve it. We carry factory (OEM) microwave parts like door switches, fuses and diodes on our trucks.

Repair or replace? It depends on the microwave’s condition, the repair price, whether parts are available, and how it is installed. Built-in and over-the-range units cost more to replace than a countertop model, so a repair is more often practical for them. Our repair-first approach is simple: we will never suggest appliance replacement if a reliable, cost-effective repair is possible.

Full microwave warranty terms are in our Terms of Service. $25 off your first residential appliance repair. New customers save $25 on the microwave repair; the $89 diagnostic isn’t part of the discount.

When to Stop Using Your Microwave

Most microwave faults are an inconvenience, not a hazard, but a few call for stopping right away. FDA microwave oven safety guidance says not to operate a microwave if the door does not close firmly or is bent, warped, or otherwise damaged, and to stop using one that keeps running with the door open.

If the microwave trips the circuit breaker again after one reset, leave it off and unplugged rather than resetting it repeatedly. Do not open the cabinet or attempt internal repairs: microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a dangerous charge even after the unit is unplugged.

Call 240-484-0269 to check the next available appointment. We’re available 24/7, including nights and weekends. Same-day microwave repair is possible on days the schedule allows.

Guides and Helpful Resources

A microwave that stops heating raises the question of whether to fix or replace a microwave, dishwasher or disposal, and our guide covers it; standing water in a dishwasher helps with a dishwasher that won’t drain. Over-the-range microwaves are sometimes recalled, so check the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall list; ENERGY STAR rates efficient replacements. Why does my microwave run without heating?

Several parts in the heating circuit can cause this, and so can settings such as control lock, demo mode, or a low power level on some models. A running fan and a lit display do not mean it is heating normally. Check your manual for those settings; if it still does not heat, it needs testing to find the failed part.

Why will my microwave not start?

The cause may be the door latch or switches, a protective device inside the unit, the control, or the outlet and circuit. Confirm the outlet works with another device. If the outlet is fine and the microwave is still dead, call us for a diagnosis.

What should I do if my microwave sparks?

Stop it right away. Remove any metal or foil and clean food residue from the cavity. If it sparks again when clean and free of metal, stop using it and schedule a repair.

What if the door is damaged?

Do not use it. FDA guidance says not to operate a microwave if the door does not close firmly or is bent, warped, or otherwise damaged, and to stop using one that keeps running with the door open.

Why does the turntable not rotate?

First make sure the glass plate and support ring are seated correctly. If they are, the turntable motor or coupler may have failed, which we can test.

Do you repair over-the-range or built-in microwaves?

Yes, we repair over-the-range and built-in microwaves as well as countertop models. Give us the brand and model number when you call so we can confirm before booking.

Is repairing my microwave worthwhile?

It depends on the unit’s condition, the repair price, parts availability, and how it is installed. Built-in and over-the-range models cost more to replace than a countertop unit. You get the price first, and we only suggest a new microwave if repairing yours isn’t reliable or worth the cost.

What warranty applies?

Parts we put in your microwave are warranted for 90 days, and our labor for 30 days. Read the specifics in our Terms of Service.

“Yahya was very knowledgeable and helped me select a new refrigerator that has the features I like. He took measurements to determine that the fridge will fit (1) through the front door, (2) past the pony wall that separates the living room from the kitchen and (3) fit in the space that the old fridge occupies.”
