Oven Problems We Diagnose and Repair

The same symptom can come from several different parts, so we test the oven before recommending a repair. These are the problems homeowners most often ask us to look at.

Oven Not Heating

An oven that turns on but stays cold may have a failed bake element or igniter, but a faulty sensor, control, wiring connection, or supply problem can cause the same symptom. We test each possibility and show you what failed before quoting the repair.

Oven Heating Unevenly

Food that browns on one side and stays pale on the other can point to a weak element, a convection fan that isn't moving air, or a worn door gasket letting heat escape. Rack position and bakeware also affect results, so we check the oven itself before blaming a part.

Slow Preheat or Not Reaching Temperature

If preheating takes much longer than it used to, or the oven never reaches the set temperature, one heat source may have stopped working while the other carries the load. A weakening gas igniter or an element that no longer heats fully are possibilities we confirm by testing.

Oven Temperature Is Off

When the temperature inside doesn't match the setting and food consistently comes out under- or overcooked, we check the temperature sensor, the control, and the oven's calibration. Some swing above and below the set point is normal, so we measure before recommending any part.

Bake or Broil Not Working

When bake works but broil doesn't, or the reverse, the fault is often limited to that one function: its element or burner, its igniter, or the control that switches it on. We confirm which part failed rather than replacing parts on a guess.

Shutting Off, Error Codes, or Door Problems

An oven that shuts off mid-cycle or shows an error code is reporting a fault, and the code alone doesn't always name the failed part. A door that won't close or seal can involve the hinges, the gasket, or the lock on self-cleaning models.

How Our Oven Repair Visits Work

Every visit starts with a diagnosis. An oven diagnosis is $89, which is credited toward the repair once you say go. The technician inspects the oven and finds the cause of the problem. Before any oven work starts, you’ll know the full price, with nothing added later. Our trucks carry common factory (OEM) oven parts for the major brands.

Repairing the oven is our first suggestion whenever it makes financial sense. If the oven is not worth fixing because of its age, its condition, or the cost of the repair compared with a replacement, we will tell you that too. The decision is always yours.

Full warranty wording for oven repairs is in our Terms of Service. $25 off your first residential appliance repair. The $25 new-customer discount comes off the oven repair; the $89 diagnosis isn’t discounted. See our current appliance repair offers.

Gas, Electric, and Wall Oven Repair

We repair electric ovens, gas ovens, built-in wall ovens, and the ovens in freestanding and slide-in ranges from major household brands. If the trouble is with the surface burners rather than the oven, see our stove and cooktop repair page.

Any gas smell around the oven means leaving the home immediately and calling your gas utility or 911 from outside. Don’t wait for a repair appointment, and leave gas-line and burner repairs to a technician. BGE’s gas leak guidance lists its emergency number and explains how it responds. Once the utility confirms your home is safe, we can diagnose the oven.

If your oven is part of a freestanding range, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s range tip-over safety alert (PDF) explains how to check that the anti-tip bracket is installed.

What Oven Repair Usually Costs

Half of the 76 oven and stove repairs we did in the past year cost between $315 and $475. A gas oven that won’t heat because of a weak bake igniter is one of the most predictable jobs, about $295–$330 in total. More repair prices here.

Oven Repair Questions

Why is my oven running but not heating?

The display, light, and fan can all work while the oven produces no heat. In an electric oven the cause may be a bake or broil element, the temperature sensor, or the control. In a gas oven it may be the igniter, the gas valve, or the gas supply. GE Appliances lists a few checks for a gas oven that will not heat that are worth a look before you book a visit. If those don’t solve it, we test the oven and tell you which part failed.

Why does my oven cook unevenly or seem too hot or too cold?

Every oven cycles above and below the temperature you set, and GE Appliances explains how much oven temperature normally swings. Whirlpool’s guide to an oven that seems too hot or too cold covers preheating, rack position, and bakeware. If food still comes out under- or overcooked, the sensor, an element, the convection fan, or the door gasket should be tested.

Is an older oven worth repairing?

Often, yes. Many oven repairs involve a single part, and we recommend replacing an oven only when a dependable, cost-effective repair is not possible. After the diagnosis you have the repair price in hand, so you can compare it with the cost of a new oven before you decide.

Do you repair gas and electric ovens?

Yes. We repair both gas and electric ovens, including built-in wall ovens and the ovens in ranges. Bake and broil problems, ignition problems, error codes, and doors that won’t close or seal properly are all things we diagnose.
